I guard your eyes
Another one of my favourite poems, also by the Hungarian poet Endre Ady, in my own translation:
With my ageing hands
I hold your hands,
With my ageing eyes
I guard your eyes.
Amidst the decay of the world,
Ancient savage, haunted by fear,
I landed with you
And I rest with you scared.
With my ageing hands
I hold your hands,
With my ageing eyes
I guard your eyes.
I don’t know why, how long,
I’ll stay with you,
But I hold your hands
And I guard your eyes.
